首先,快速閱讀掌握大意。不管平時閱讀還是考試做閱讀題,學生們應帶著問題快速瀏覽從中尋找答案。把握關鍵詞是必要的。通過關鍵詞來推理文章的思路和作者的態度。如果閱讀文章時,閱讀速度太慢,就會出現看了下句忘了上句,對文章沒有整體把握,結果只見樹木不見森林。另外,閱讀時,特別是第一次閱讀可以跳讀。千萬不要一字一句地讀。閱讀時,可以以詞組或短語為單位。當然,僅讀一遍難以全部領會文章的意思。必要時,可以多讀幾遍。第一次,要快讀;第二次以后,可以仔細地讀。
第二,不要一遇到生詞就查詞典,要學會猜詞。如果一遇到生詞就查詞典,這樣會影響閱讀速度。另一方面,一個單詞往往會有許多意思,有時不聯系文章特定的情景,很難確定生詞的確切含義。學生們可以根據上下文和構詞法等規則去大膽地猜這個生詞在文中可能是什么意思。如能猜中詞意,那么學生會對閱讀英文文章興趣倍增,會有成就感,這樣對提高英語水平非常有益。

第五,建議學生們背課文精彩段落。學生們上早自習時可以自己選擇感興趣的幾段反復朗讀直至可以復述或背下來。如能長期堅持,必定會有大的收獲。經常背課文可以增強英文語感。有了強烈的語感,閱讀理解能力會不知不覺地慢慢提高。
