我們知道，英語中的動詞有時態(tài)變化，在英語新聞標(biāo)題中也不例外。但由于新聞標(biāo)題必須言簡意賅，不可能采用英語的完整時態(tài)形式來濃縮新聞事實。為此，新聞標(biāo)題形成了自身獨(dú)有的時態(tài)特點，以達(dá)到使動詞既傳神達(dá)意又具時間感的目的。英文報刊的新聞標(biāo)題中一般不用過去時態(tài)，當(dāng)然更不用過去完成時等時態(tài)，而采用現(xiàn)在時態(tài)，使讀者閱報時有如置身于這條新聞事件中之感覺，這叫做“新聞現(xiàn)在時”（journalistic presenttense），與文學(xué)寫作中的“歷史現(xiàn)在時”（historical present tense）實際上完全一樣。所以，英語新聞標(biāo)題中常用的動詞時態(tài)主要有三種：一般現(xiàn)在時、將來時和現(xiàn)在進(jìn)行時。現(xiàn)分述如下：

1）一般現(xiàn)在時通常被用來表示過去發(fā)生的事。

（1）年份通常用阿拉伯?dāng)?shù)字表示，用基數(shù)詞讀。公元前用B.C.表示，公元用A.D.

（8）在球類、棋類名詞前不用冠詞。如：
